A Day at the Cheese & Chilli Festival, Winchester
This weekend, my son and I headed off to the Cheese & Chilli Festival in Winchester, and what a fantastic family day out it turned out to be.
As someone who is increasingly immersing myself in the world of food and wine, I found the whole experience both so enjoyable and genuinely inspiring. What stood out most wasn't just the incredible food, but the passion behind it. Every stall owner seemed to have a story to tell, whether they were producing artisan chutneys, hot sauces, infused honeys, wines, or handcrafted preserves. You could see the pride they had in their products, and that enthusiasm was infectious.
My son, who has developed in to quite the foodie, was absolutely in his element. He happily wandered from stall to stall sampling everything he could get his hands on. From spiral potatoes and loaded fries to indulgent Kinder Bueno strawberry desserts and countless sauces, chutneys and condiments, he embraced every opportunity to try something new - Super proud mum!
Of course, all that tasting came with a consequence. By the end of the day, we'd somehow accumulated a rather impressive haul of goodies to take home.
The festival wasn't just about food, though. There was plenty of entertainment throughout the day, making it a brilliant event for families. Live music provided a great atmosphere, and there was enough going on to keep children engaged between eating sessions.
The highlight for us both was the chilli eating competition. Watching brave contestants attempt to conquer increasingly fiery chillies was absolutely hilarious. My son and I spent most of the competition doubled over laughing.
We left with full stomachs, lighter wallets, plenty of treats to enjoy at home, and some wonderful memories together.
The inspiration didn't end when we left the festival. Once we got home that evening, I couldn't wait to start experimenting with some of our purchases. One of the highlights of our haul was a delicious chutney from a lovely independent producer, The Fabulous Fruit Company. I used it to create a rich tomato risotto for dinner. It was the perfect way to round off the experience and a wonderful reminder of why supporting small, passionate food businesses is so rewarding. Their products don't just taste great—they inspire creativity in your own kitchen too.
I'd highly recommend the Cheese & Chilli Festival to anyone looking for a fun family day out, especially if you have a budding foodie in the family. Just be warned—you'll probably spend more money than you planned once you've tasted everything!
